Security: Essential Software and Settings

  • Install and continuously update anti-virus software and regularly scan computers for viruses.  http://www.microsoft.com/security/pypc.aspx
  • Ensure that operating system and other program settings are set to automatically download security updates. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/windowsupdate/default.mspx
  • Ensure that a firewall is installed on your computer and is configured to achieve protection from intrusion.
  • Filtering and blocking programsexternal link can assist with reducing misuse and risks. However, it is important to realize that programs cannot protect children from all online dangers (i.e., programs can be "defeated" by users, no program can block every inappropriate site.) Use of such a program is a personal decision and you'll probably need to explain to your child why you feel that it is necessary.
